Positive Mental Health Habits to Practice: PRIME
By: Dr. Kris Peterson, Medical Director

Mental health wellness behaviors are important to fight against depression and anxiety. It is also helpful in sustaining wellness. I recommend adopting the acronym and PRIME approach to foster mental health wellness.
The "P" stands for Purpose, emphasizing the importance of finding meaning and direction in life, which can significantly enhance emotional resilience and motivation. Often a broad brush of this relates to ‘faith, family and friends”.
"R" represents Rest and Relaxation; prioritizing quality sleep and engaging in activities that reduce stress are crucial for mental restoration and balance. "I" refers to Intake, encompassing not only nutritious food choices that support brain health but also mindful consumption of mental content—being selective about what you watch, read, and listen to—since these greatly influence mood and cognitive well-being.
"M" stands for Meditation and/or Prayer, practices that promote mindfulness, reduce anxiety, and cultivate inner peace.
Finally, "E" highlights Exercise, both mental and physical; regular physical activity and cognitive challenges boost overall brain function, mood, and stress management.
By integrating these PRIME behaviors into daily routines, individuals can proactively support and sustain their mental wellness. Using principles surrounding PRIME can be helpful in moving towards and sustaining wellness.
